“PMK against real estate business in the guise of SEZs”

Questions allotment of land to companies by government

CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss has reiterated that his party is not against special economic zones and satellite towns in the State, but is against real estate business in the guise of SEZs and satellite towns.

Addressing mediapersons here on Saturday, Dr. Ramadoss questioned the alleged allotment of 30 acres to Tata and 35 acres to DLF by the State government for SEZs at Taramani.

The government was yet to disclose the price at which the lands were sold. Though it claimed that TIDCO was a shareholder in the deal, it was learnt that its share was just one per cent.

Dr. Ramadoss said the PMK would launch a people’s movement in support of prohibition with the support of non-governmental organisations.

As a first step, it would organise a women’s conference in support of liquor eradication in all district headquarters. It would be held in Ramanathapuram district on July 8 and in Kanyakumari district on July 9. The women’s wing of the party would organise demonstrations in front of TASMAC shops on July 12.

It was unfortunate that the State government, instead of taking steps to reduce liquor consumption, was interested in increasing revenue through liquor sale. He was ready to offer suggestions to generate revenue to compensate the loss to the exchequer if prohibition was introduced.

Ruling out any reconciliation with the DMK, Dr. Ramadoss said his party continued to be a part of the Congress-led alliance.
