Enforce rules in buses

The seats reserved for women in buses are often occupied by men, and they do not give any importance to the letters written on the seats or in the bus. They do not vacate these seats even if women demand the same. My experience of travelling frequently by the Vijayawada-Gudivada ordinary service has made me come to a conclusion that the APSRTC staff are also least bothered to enforce the reservation of seats. I request the APSRTC higher ups to take immediate steps to ensure that the seats reserved for women are kept vacant for them.

Beautify Gandhi hill

Gandhi Hill is one of the important places to be visited in Vijayawada by any tourist. But, it is unfortunate that it is not being developed up to the mark. The planetarium on the hill needs to be renovated and the seating arrangement should be made more comfortable to accommodate more people. The shows can be well organised, so that people from different places can get attracted to it. So, I request the concerned authorities to consider this and develop more facilities on the hill, so that it may become another tourist place of interest to be visited in Vijayawada.

In utter neglect

The news item ‘Pipeline issue : all eyes on Chief Minister’, published in these columns on June 2 only proves the incompetence of the Guntur Municipal Corporation, which is unable to complete even a minor project like the shifting of a pipeline for five long years. It is unfortunate that the Chief Minister’s intervention is sought for what is essentially the job of an assistant engineer of the Corporation. Heavy traffic and potholed roads lead to huge traffic snarls at Manipuram gate, causing inconvenience to hapless road users. The delay will only worsen the situation during rains. Going by the GMC’s track record, residents of Guntur would certainly witness another harrowing monsoon experience on the roads.

No meaning in Goud’s contention

The exit of senior leader T. Devender Goud from the Telugu Desam Party on the grounds that injustice is being done to the region has no meaning. He was minister for 10 years and occupied important positions in the TDP. What prevented him from developing Telangana? This apart, the low polling percentage and the minority share of votes that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi garnered in the recent by-elections have proved conclusively that the so-called Telangana sentiment is weak. The 40 per cent of voters who did not cast their vote have sent out a signal that basic needs are more important to them than a separate State.

Recharge coupons

Pan shops and kiosks that sell recharge coupons of smaller denominations of various mobile phone companies have been selling them for a little higher price than the cover price. They generally add a rupee for their profit and sell them, for example, a Rs.10 recharge coupon is being sold for Rs.11. This is very common in any shop in the city. If anyone asks them the reason, they only say that it is a surcharge. The truth, according to a retailer, is that they make a profit only 10 paise on selling each coupon, which is almost nothing. So, they themselves add this ‘local tax’. It is time mobile phone companies start offering a little higher commission to kiosks and prevent this kind of unauthorised sale.
