Valley shut down for 8th day
MOUNTING PROTESTS: The All Parties Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani organised a protest rally on the issue of transfer of forest land to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board in Srinagar on Monday.
SRINAGAR: Kashmir Valley witnessed a complete shutdown for the eighth consecutive day on Monday in protest against the transfer of land to the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board. Shops and business establishments, government offices, educational institutions and banks were closed. Traffic was off the road. Though the situation was generally peaceful, protests continued to shatter the calm in some areas, injuring 27 people.
A large procession was taken out in Srinagar downtown, led by hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani. The protesters raised slogans and demanded revocation of the order. In Sheeri, Janbazpora and Khanpora in Baramulla, the demonstrations took a violent turn as police fired teargas shells, injuring over a dozen people. In Sholipora Budgam some people were injured. Reports said peaceful demonstrations were held in Kupwara.

Mian Abdul Qayoom, chairman of the Action Committee Against Land Transfer which has called a “Srinagar Chalo,” said separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik would lead the “historic gathering” at Jamia Masjid on Tuesday.
