New York: Sikhs here protested on Monday against an attack on a 12-year-old girl, whose long hair was cut by a fellow student. The June 9 incident at a public school is the third in two months targeting a Sikh student in the city’s Queens Borough. Cutting of hair violates Sikh religious beliefs. School officials said the accused student was immediately suspended. On June 3, a student tried to remove a Sikh’s turban and punched him in the face at the Richmond Hill High School. In May, a student’s turban was removed and his hair cut at another Queens school. — AP © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
