Demand for sidewalks

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Residents’ associations in the Perookada and Kudappanakkunnu areas have decided to petition the Chief Minister for the construction of proper sidewalks and drainage system along the Peroorkada-Kudappanakkunnu stretch.

This was decided at a meeting of representatives of a dozen residents’ associations in the area.

President of the Freemen’s Club V.V. Karunakaran pointed out at the meeting that rainwater and waste water originating in Peroorkada flowed into NCC Nagar due to the absence of a good drainage system in the area.This was damaging the roads in the area.

Gradients of the roads should be taken into account while constructing side drains.

The drains should be covered with slabs to ensure the safety of pedestrians, who can also use those as a sidewalk, he added.

Former Chairman of the Railway Board M.N. Prasad who inaugurated the meeting suggested various measures for pedestrian safety, a pressnote issued here said. Soil and aggregate should be rammed into cuts made on the roads before they were resurfaced, the pressnote quoted him as saying.

Speakers at the meeting pointed out that once the Civil Station at Kudappanakkunnu became operational the problems faced by pedestrians would only increase.
