Seminar on fisheries

KOCHI: The output growth in the fisheries sector had sharply decelerated after the World Trade Organisation (WTO) regime came into being, said Dr. Ramesh Chand, National Professor, National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research. He was delivering the key note address at a one-day seminar on “WTO and its impact on sea food trade” organised by Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) in collaboration with Central Institute of Fisheries Technology here.

A.G. Ponniah, director, Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai, highlighted the need for making more investments in science to effectively combat the ‘unreasonable’ WTO regulations in the fisheries sector.

K. Gopakumar, former Deputy Director General, Fisheries, Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR); Asha Parameshwaran, deputy director, MPEDA and others addressed the technical session.
