Expo showcases Thai art and culture

CHENNAI: A three-day exposition, “Destination Thailand-2008” showcasing the art, architecture, souvenirs, decorative goods, kitchenware articles, and the herbal massage of Thai style was inaugurated at the Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, by the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala.
Organised by the Department of Export Promotion, Thailand, the Thailand Trade exhibition, features exquisite collection of artefacts, health and beauty products, fruits promoted by the Department of Agriculture Extension, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperative, Thailand, fancy leather bags, and bicycles produced under the Indo-Thai joint venture company.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Barnala said that trade between India and Thailand had been growing steadily. Bilateral trade between the two countries had reached over 4 billion US dollars in 2007. “I am happy to learn that the trade between India and Thailand is expected to reach 10 billion US dollars by 2010,” the Governor added.
The Deputy Minister of Commerce, Government of Thailand, Viroon Tejapaibul, said owing to the success of last year’s exhibition, a decision was taken to hold this year’s exposition on a grand scale.
“We had 100,000 visitors last time and we hope it would cross the 300,000 this year”, Mr.Tejapaibul added.
Suphot Yanthukij, Consul-General of Thailand in Chennai, said “Destination Thailand-2008” was a special event and hoped that it would further enhance the trade opportunities between India and Thailand besides promoting tourism.
The business hour for the exhibition is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and visiting hours for the general public is between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
