KOZHIKODE: The Indian Farmers Movement (Infam) will convene meetings of farmers who are denied benefits of the Central government’s loan waiver scheme. Infam general secretary Fr. Antony Kozhuvanal welcomed the action taken to write off farm loans, but pointed out that the government should also take note of the bitterness it had generated among a large number of farmers who had paid back the loans from cooperative banks He alleged that the government had failed to project the case of these farmers before the Centre. Infam’s representations on this issue to the Central government had gone unnoticed. Infam’s conventions of “honest farmers” would be organised all panchayats. The first of these would be in Thottumukkom in the parish hall on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Infam would prepare a list of “honest” farmers who had raised money with great difficulty, sometimes pledging gold to repay their farm loans. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
