Sparkling: The new look Amma Mandapam bathing ghat on the banks of the Cauvery in Srirangam. TIRUCHI: The Amma Mandapam bathing ghat on the banks of the river Cauvery in Srirangam has been given a facelift under Tourism Development programme. The bathing ghat is the first destination for most devotees, for a holy dip, before visiting Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple. The comprehensive improvements carried out now would meet a felt need, though some routine maintenance works are done at the bathing ghat before the Vaikunda Ekadasi festival every year. The ghat sports a new tiled-flooring and a changing room for women has been built. The old public conveniences at the place have been demolished for new ones. A sevarthi mandapam and a purohit mandapam are being built at the site. A minor park with landscaping has also been planned. The Tourism Department has sanctioned Rs.3.72 crore for half-a-dozen components to be executed as part of the tourism development works in the heritage town of Srirangam. Of this, Rs.40 lakh was sanctioned for the improvements at the bathing ghat and Rs.18.89 lakh for the construction of sevarthi mandapam. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
