Move will pave way for total privatisation: JAC

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: With the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly’s select committee set to consider the proposal to convert two aided colleges into private universities on Monday, the Joint Action Council of College Teachers has reiterated its opposition to the move.

The proposal “will pave the way for total privatisation and alienation” and should be withdrawn, according to a JAC press release issued on Sunday. In the last Assembly session, the government had proposed that the aided PSG colleges in Coimbatore and Thiagarajar colleges in Madurai be converted into universities.

The government also plans to convert five government colleges into universities by promulgating an ordinance. Opposing this plan as well, the JAC said it would “be detrimental to the welfare of students and teachers” and asked the government to discuss the issue with all stakeholders concerned.
