Amarjeet Singh wins triple jump title

NEW DELHI: Amarjeet Singh won the triple jump title in the Malaysia pre-Olympic championships in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, but fell short of the Olympic qualification mark for the third time in recent weeks.

Aiming to achieve at least 16.80 metres (‘B’ qualification standard), Amarjeet jumped 16.64 metres. The ‘A’ standard is 17.10 metres.

National record-holder Renjith Maheswary already has a norm (17.04m) achieved last year, but he has not crossed 16.53 metres this season.

His place in the Olympic team could come under scrutiny in case Amarjeet attains the ‘B’ standard. Amarjeet has recorded 16.67 (Madurai), 16.49 (Bangkok), 16.77 (Korat) and 16.63 (Hanoi) during the past three weeks.

Krishnamohan second

Another Indian also aiming for an Olympic qualification mark, K. Krishnamohan, finished second with a time of 14.02s, 0.2s poorer than his inter-State timing at Madurai for the 110m hurdles.

The qualification norm is 13.72s, a time that the gold medal winner, Mohammed Robani Hassan of Malaysia, also failed to achieve.

He clocked a personal best 13.85 secs.
