London: V.V.S. Laxman is set to join Nottinghamshire as a replacement for Adam Voges of Australia, it was announced here on Tuesday. Voges will play his final game of the season for Nottinghamshire against Durham, starting on August 12, before returning to Australia.

Laxman, who had a brief stint with Lancashire last season, will make his Nottinghamshire debut against Sussex at Hove on August 27.

The 33-year-old batsman hit two centuries and two half-centuries in five county games for Lancashire.

“I’ve heard lots of great things about Nottinghamshire and I’m really looking forward to playing for them,” Laxman said about his upcoming stint with Notts.

“Hopefully, it will be a successful time for the club and I can make a positive impact,” he said.

“Laxman is a world class player and he doesn’t play ODI cricket for India so he can commit to us at a time when a lot of players will be involved in international tournaments,” said Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket Mick Newell.

“He is an accomplished international batsman with excellent footwork and he reads spin very well. He is a big name and we’re pleased that he has agreed to join us,” he added. — P. Subramanyam
