Subway a waste of infrastructure Readers React

Sir,

Nearly 15 years ago a subway was constructed at RTC crossroads which took more than a year to get completed.

Though it was inconvenient for commuters to ply on the road while the flyover was being constructed, they hoped it would end their traffic woes. Finally, the sub way was opened with lot of fanfare and now, stands closed for reasons best known to the authorities.

Is it not possible to throw open the subway for public use as a lot of public money was spent on its construction?

Sitaram

Ashok Nagar Dear Mr. Sitaram,

I have contacted the concerned Additional Commissioners in GHMC and I am told that they are seriously examining the possibility of restoring it to public use.

Sir,

Hyderabadis are reluctant to follow rules as they are not enforced strictly. The only way to make them comply with the law is by imposing severe penalties.

Seven-seater auto-rickshaws halt on the narrow lane that connects Yousufguda crossroads near Krishna Kant Park, blocking the traffic. What can be done to ease congestion on the lane?

Prof. M.R.Madhav

Banjara Hills Dear Prof. Madhav,

Strict measures are always there for booking violators. We are sending more and more drivers who were caught driving on the wrong side to the court and are listing out to habitual offenders and are planning to write to the RTA for disqualifying them as holders of driving licence.

Boards for prohibiting entry of seven-seaters are going to be put up, so that there are no grey areas.

As it is, they are being sent to RTA, if they enter restricted areas and are being fined heavily.

Sir,

Policemen on traffic duty should be given more powers so that they can book the traffic offenders irrespective of their position in the society and without fear of intimidation from their superior officers.

It is pathetic to see cops standing at the junctions without any shelter and manning the traffic in hot and humid conditions.

Also, the government has spent huge amount in widening the roads but most of the commuters are parking their vehicles on the roads itself.

V. Srinivasa Reddy

Himayath Nagar Dear Mr. Reddy,

I am grateful to your concern for the traffic police and we are taking care of their working conditions.

As regards wrong parking, it is a big menace, and as you have rightly observed, vehicles parked haphazardly are taking away road space and obstructing traffic movement, despite road-widening.

We are booking them and also towing away such vehicles. But, their numbers are huge and there is need for greater civic sense in this regard.
