City police limits to be extended

L. Srikrishna

Proposal has been sent for approval

MADURAI: A fresh proposal to extend the Madurai city police jurisdiction has been prepared for the State Government’s approval.

Police department sources said on Tuesday that in the new proposal, four sub-divisions in Madurai Rural police limits — Tirupparankundram, Othakadai, Samayanallur and Oomachikulam — would come under the Madurai City police limits.

Currently, the Madras High Court Bench, airport, Madurai Kamaraj University, Alagarkoil and Tirupparankundram are covered by the Madurai Rural police. After the proposal got approved, they would come under the city police fold.

Similarly, some changes have been made in the functioning of Madurai City Police as well.

In the present system, three Deputy Commissioners of Police are posted as DCP (Law and Order), DCP (Crime) and DCP (Traffic). In the new proposal, it will be DCP (South) and DCP (North), where the officers will be in charge of both maintenance of law and order and crime prevention, among other areas.

Instead of the DCP (Headquarters), it has been proposed to have an officer in the rank of DIG of Police (Headquarters), who will function at the Commissionerate.

As for the traffic wing, the city will have an officer in the rank of DCP who will have jurisdiction over the entire city.

More ACPs

In the present jurisdiction, Madurai City police have 17 police stations. For every three stations, an officer in the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police is posted. In the new proposal, two police stations will come under each ACP, which means, the city police will get a few more officers in the rank of ACP. Inspectors of Police in the respective jurisdiction would be responsible for both law and order and crime wings.
