Scintillating performance
Mummaneni Subba Rao Sidhendra Kalapeetham of Vijayawada presented the Kuchipudi dance drama Srikrishna Paarajatham at the Sidhardha auditorium with renowned Kuchipudi exponent Sobha Naidu playing the role of Satyabhama. As expected, she gave a superb performance. The ballet began with the entrance of sage Narada who is known as Kalaha bhojana. Starving for opportunity, he plans to create some friction between Krishna and Satyabhama and quell the pride of Satyabhama. He gets hold of a rare and divine flower ‘Paaraijatham’ and asks Krishna to give it to Rukmini, which Krishna does. Narada carries the information to Satyabhama who, seethes with anger. Krishna tries to pacify her, but in vain. Then enters Narada who sets everything right explaining to Satyabhama, Krishna’s divinity and His love for both Rukmini and her. Krishna pleases Satyabhama by planting the Paarijatha tree itself in her palace. Satyabhama repents and seeks forgiveness. This story was beautifully unfolded by Sobha and her troupe. Sobha, looking winsome and explicit in her abhinayam in the role of Satyabhama, stole the show. There are only four characters in the ballet. Pallavi looked fine in the role of Krishna. Srilakshmi and Ushakiran were adequate in the roles of Rukmini and Narada respectively. One wished that the musical support could have been better. Vocal support by Lavanya Latha and Kanna Rao lacked clarity. Mahankali Mohan’s nattuvangam was efficient. Dattatreya’s flute was not up to the mark. Mridangist P.R.C. Sarma was excellent. The program was delayed by 45 minutes due to the late arrival of the artistes at the venue and this sort of delay is an unusual happening the Kalapeethams programs.
