CBI clarifies on case against Mayawati

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Reacting to allegations levelled by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BSP leader Mayawati that the government was “targeting” her by “misusing” the CBI in a disproportionate assets case, the agency has clarified that its counter-affidavit was in compliance with the specific direction given on May 15 by the Supreme Court.

In a note on Saturday, the CBI denied allegations that it had circulated counter-affidavit’s copies to the media.

Noting that innuendoes had been attributed to the filing of the counter-affidavit, the agency said it had no option but to file the counter-affidavit in compliance with the court directions.

“The counter-affidavit is in response to the writ petition of May 9, 2008 filed by Ms. Mayawati challenging the FIR registered by CBI on October 5, 2003 and is broadly in the nature of para-wise reply. It is also clarified that during the hearing on May 15, the CBI counsel had informed the Supreme Court that the CBI had completed the investigation and was ready to file the report under Section 173 (2)of the Cr.PC.”
