PERAMBALUR: A 26-acre site has been identified at Odhiyam village on Perambalur–Ariyalur highway for the proposed government medical college and hospital and construction work is expected to commence soon.

The site would be transferred to the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) within a week. Higher officials from the directorate would inspect the area and ascertain its suitability, Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology A. Raja told presspersons after inspecting site, on Sunday, accompanied by Collector Anil Meshram, MLAs, M. Rajkumar and S. Sivasankar.

Rs.10 crore sanctioned

As a full-fledged hospital is a pre-requisite for starting a medical college, the construction of the Government Headquarters Hospital would be immediately taken up for which a sum of Rs.10 crore had already been sanctioned by the Chief Minister.

The buildings for the hospital and the college would be constructed within a year, and, after obtaining the clearance and approval from the Medical Council of India, students would be admitted to the college.

It was only recently that a 20-acre site was identified at Kavanoor near Vilangudi in Ariyalur district for establishing the new constituent college of Anna University, Tiruchi.
