PROUD RECIPIENT: W.I. Davaram, Vice President, TNOA, gives away a memento to B. Sivanthi Adityan at a function on Saturday. Chennai: Contrary to expectations, the general body meeting of the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association deferred the decision on the issue of factional squabbles in the administration of basketball and hockey. The three-member committee, consisting of Messrs. W.I. Dawaram, J.S. Chopra and C.R. Visswanathan, appointed to go into the issues related to claims and counter claims has advised the TNOA not only to seek a legal opinion before giving any direction to the associations, but take into consideration the opinion of the respective national federations. In the case of hockey, it will be the ad hoc committee, now governing the sport, after IOA had suspended the IHF. Summing up the proceedings to The Hindu, Mr. Murugan, Secretary, conceded that the TNOA had to proceed with extreme caution because of the legal issues involved in settling the disputes among the factions. He agreed it was the responsibility of the Olympic Association to evolve a formula to deal with situations where contradictory claims were made. He was optimistic that a solution would soon be found. The meeting also directed the member units to furnish a list of affiliated districts and their office bearers for maintaining a record. Mr. B.S. Adityan, who presided over the meeting, plumbed for greater financial assistance to sports like taekwondo, sepak-takraw, judo, wushu and fencing. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
