CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Monday ordered notice to the Coimbatore police on a habeas corpus petition filed by an advocate seeking production before the court of five persons, including three advocates, and setting them at liberty. In his petition, E. Gokulakrishnan of Triplicane submitted that following a request from his sister Jayanthi, a resident of Ganapathy, Coimbatore, to assist her in connection with a complaint preferred by her to the police, he, along with advocates Manivannan, Chinnalagu and Shankar travelled in a car driven by Ajmal. At Coimbatore, they met the Commissioner of Police, who asked them to meet the Assistant Commissioner (AC). The AC asked them to withdraw the complaint. Thereafter, his sister and the other four were taken to Saravanapatti police station and detained. Later, she was forced to withdraw her complaint. Thereafter, the detenus were shifted to an unknown place. The detention was illegal and violative of the Constitution, the petitioner said. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
