Cement employees’ plea to Government

ARIYALUR: Ariyalur Cement Factory Employee’s Association, affiliated to the All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), has urged the State Government to procure cement from the factory at the same cost it pays for procuring the product from the open market for its requirements.

The demand was adopted as a resolution at a public meeting it conducted in front of Arasu Cements, the factory run by Tamil Nadu Cement Corporation Ltd.

Addressing the meeting, All-India Trade Union Congress State president and Coimbatore MP K. Subbarayan of CPI demanded that the government modernise the machinery in the 30-year old factory, expand the factory and make appointments in the numerous vacancies without delay.

By another resolution, the meeting deplored the Government’s delay in providing each employee Rs.6,500 as per an agreement reached between the unions and cement factory owners on April 29, 2004.

Immediate promotions

The AITUC also sought immediate promotions, employment priority for family members of employees who had died in harnessand those whose land was acquired for establishing the factory.

Contract workers appointed in the place of regular employees must be extended privileges in terms of refreshment, pay package and medical facilities.

Employees affiliated to AITUC will take part in large numbers in the rally that government employees have planned at Chennai on August 12, the meeting resolved.

Administrative committee formed

A 29-member administrative committee was formed during the meeting.

The following were chosen office-bearers: T. Dhandapani, AITUC district unit general secretary – president, A. Ramachandran – Secretary, C. Duraikannu, M. Kaliaperumal and R. Tamilazhagan – vice-presidents, R. Rajendran, R. Sampath and R. Govindasamy – deputy secretaries and M. Venkatesan – Treasurer.
