B.Sc. (Hons) Maths to start from next session

Re-employment of superannuated teachers from 65 to 70 yrs rejected

NEW DELHI: The Academic Council of Delhi University has approved the fusion of the syllabus of B.A. (Hons) and B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics to give way to a single B.Sc. degree in that subject.

“The new revised syllabus has been passed. There was some opposition, but since by and large the procedure in revising the syllabus had been followed correctly, it was approved. As this year separate admissions have already been made to the two courses, B.Sc. Mathematics (Hons) will be implemented from the next academic session (2009-10),” said an elected member of the Academic Council.

Another member, who had expressed concern over the manner in which University ordinances had been “bypassed” in revising the syllabus, said he hoped the Mathematics Department would conduct workshops to familiarise the teachers with the new syllabus.

“The Academic Council also unanimously rejected the University Grants Commission’s proposal for grant of re-employment to superannuated teachers from 65 to 70 years,” said Rajib Ray, a member. Delhi University Teachers’ Association has welcomed this decision.

“We had been mobilising the University community against this proposal. We feel that this provision would make the teaching profession even more unattractive and in the long term compromise its quality by disallowing timely and regular infusion of talent,” said DUTA president Aditya Narayan Misra.

The Council had also decided to renew the term of ad hoc teachers in the University from July 16, bringing great relief to more than 400 ad hoc teachers working in Delhi University.
