Panel to shortlist names for AIIMS chief’s post

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Institute Body of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday constituted a select committee to shortlist two names for the post of Director of the premier institute.

The select committee, chaired by Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, will have the Union Health and Family Welfare Secretary, the Director-General of the Indian Council for Medical Research, the Union Human Resource Development Ministry (Higher Education) Secretary, the Scientific Advisor to Prime Minister, the Director-General of the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research, the chairperson of the University Grants Commission, the Director-General Health Services, a representative each from the Government Stanley Hospital (Chennai) and the National Board of Examination as its members.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Union Health and Family Welfare Secretary Naresh Dayal said the select committee would scrutinise the 70 applications received for the post that fell vacant on July 2 after P. Venugopal demitted office. The acting Director, T.D. Dogra, is also an aspirant.

The select committee will meet twice — the first meeting is scheduled for July 21 — before it shortlists two names which would be sent to the Institute Body. The final approval would be made by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and the process was expected to be completed in a month.

The government had invited nominations on May 24. Applications were sought from Non-Resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin as well.
