MADURAI: Members and supporters belonging to various Gandhian movements and organisations in the city observed a dawn -to-dusk fast at the West Masi-North Masi junction here on Friday, demanding implementation of total prohibition in the State .

Quoting Gandhi, the protestors said, the Mahatma identified consumption of alcohol as a major social evil and urged ban on drinking and called for total prohibition.

It was enforced in the Constitution, but ever since the Dravidian parties came to power they had violated this edict with impunity, stating that liquor industry was a major source of revenue.

The protestors were led by R. Ramachandran, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Gandhi Mandra Iyakkam. Freedom fighter I. Mayandi Bharathi, Lakshmi Kanthan Bharathi, former Civil services officer, and K.S.K.Rajendran, MLA Madurai West, were among those who offered felicitations.
