Hyderabad: An extortionist Gouru Suresh, 33, was shot dead by the police in an alleged encounter in the heart of the city near the former Air India Cargo centre late on Friday night. Suresh was stated to have been demanding Rs. 10 lakh from a hotel owner in the city for the past one week. He threatened to kidnap and kill the hotelier, Task Force DCP V.B. Kamalahasan Reddy told The Hindu. The hotel owner approached the police and a trap was laid for Suresh. Walks into trapThe hotelier was reportedly asked to come to cargo centre in Begumpet and hand over the money. Plainclothes policemen trailed the hotelier and on spotting Suresh asked him to surrender, Mr. Reddy said. “As he tried to open fire, we retaliated,” the DCP said. The incident was reported to have occurred around 11.45 p.m. Sometime after the shots were fired, police went on a search and stumbled upon the body of Suresh. A 9 mm country-made pistol was recovered from the spot. The slain man was allegedly involved in several abductions in different parts of the State, including the abduction of Krishnamraju, a realtor in Hyderabad last year in Banjara Hills. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
