Transporters warned

CHENNAI: Transport Commissioner C.P. Singh has warned transporters, truck operators and owners of goods carriers of the maximum penalties prescribed under the law, if they indulged in overloading.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, he said a recent study had revealed that over-loading, especially by goods transport vehicles, was the major reason for road accidents in the State. The Transport Department had urged the Chennai Port Trust and other agencies not to allow any vehicle to overload and give details of transport companies that were found to indulge in overloading.

He said steps had been taken to check overloading by autorickshaws and share-autos in the city and elsewhere.
