GUNTUR: Life in Guntur city is limping back to normalcy after Friday evening’s destruction of property from gales and heavy rain for more than two hours. The main damage was inundation of several low-lying areas in the city and the Guntur Municipal Corporation had begun dewatering from five such colonies in the city, but there was not much of inconvenience to the people to trigger any further measures, said Municipal Commissioner Siddhartha Jain on Saturday. Number of trees had fallen at several places in the city with Nagarampalem being the worst affected where many of the power lines and poles were affected due to falling of palmera and other avenue trees. At Mayabazaar Colony a tree and an electric pole fell on a car and an autorickshaw parked on the road. The Electricity Department was clearing the trees and Municipal staff helped them remove the obstruction by transporting them away from the city. The Commissioner also ordered spraying of anti-larval chemicals in the puddles on all the roads in the city so that they do not turn breeding grounds for mosquitoes. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
