‘Mega Mela’ a hit in Pudukottai

PUDUKOTTAI: Applicants awaiting police verification certificates for obtaining passports were the single largest group of people who benefitted from the Mega Mela organised by the police here Sunday.

For Kavitha of Pudukottai, who has planned to leave abroad shortly, the event could not have come at a better time. She along with several other applicants awaiting passports got the certificates on the spot during the mela.

The ‘Mega Mela’ was organised to instil confidence among petitioners and those seeking some assistance or other from the police. The programme aims at reaching out to the needy persons, according to the Superintendent of Police, P. Moorthi, who set up 12 teams of police to resolve pending petitions.

Petty cases, petitions for police certificates for loss of mark-sheets or other documents and even ‘girl missing’ cases were resolved.

A total 167 petitions pending for the last six months at six stations in Pudukottai town, Tirugokarnam, Gandarvakottai, Adhanakottai, Ganesh Nagar and the All Women Police station were disposed off within five hours. Of them, 76 petitions pertained to the police enquiry for passport applicants.

“The presence of the applicants, along with those cited under ‘reference’ for cross-verification, eased the process of the issue of the verification certificate without any hitch,” says the Deputy Superintendent of Police, C. Palanichamy, who co-ordinated the mela.

A pending case pertaining to ‘girl missing’ was also settled much to the joy of the parents of a bridegroom and a bride, says the Inspector of Police C. Mukesh Jaikumar.

The police have planned to organise a campaign in the town shortly to sensitise the masses on adhering to traffic rules.
