Priority for improving sanitary conditions

NAMAKKAL: The Central and State Governments accord top priority for improving sanitary conditions in the rural areas, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan said.

More funds are being allotted for the construction of sanitary complexes particularly for women in the rural areas, the Minister said after inaugurating community halls and sanitary complexes that had been constructed at a cost of Rs. 21 lakh that had been allotted under her constituency development fund in Kabilamalai block recently.

The new facilities were created in Kabilakurichi, Chinnachozhipalayam, Sakthipalayam, Marapalayam and Jameen Ilampillai villages in the block.

The Minister said that the constituency development fund was primarily being allotted in order to create facilities, which could be utilised by the people for a long period of time in various places.

Works such as construction of new overhead water tanks, community halls, toilets, roads and drainage facilities were being taken up under the scheme for the benefit of the people, she pointed out.

She appealed to the villagers to ensure proper maintenance of the public infrastructure facilities.

Later, the Minister distributed welfare assistance including old age pension, marriage assistance and free house sites.

Collector U. Sagayam, presiding, asked the officials to the plant tree saplings near the newly constructed buildings.

He called upon the elected representatives to co-operate with the administration in maintaining public buildings.

District Rural Development Agency Project Officer P. Renuka Devi and senior officials were present.
