Bangladesh team visits Tambaram post office

TAMBARAM: A delegation of officials from the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications of Bangladesh visited the Tambaram Head Post Office on Monday as part of a tour to study the partnership between post offices here and Western Union.

Jasmin Akhter, Deputy Post Master General, Foreign Post, Bangladesh, told The Hindu that they had tied up with Western Union back home and launched the scheme on July 13.

They were visiting India to study the system, know how the Postal Department stood to gain, benefits for people receiving money from abroad, the software and other technical aspects involved in it. “We have come to know that India has adopted an easy system for implementing it and we are impressed," she said.

After discussions with senior officials of the Chennai Region, they first visited Tambaram Head Post Office, had detailed interactions with staff at the post office and also spoke to people waiting to complete their transactions.

The delegation, Ms.Jasmin Akhter said, would be visiting post offices in Bangalore and West Bengal, but came to Tamil Nadu first. They would also be visiting post offices in Tiruchi and Madurai regions too.

The delegation also comprised Masud Khan, Assistant PMG, other officials from the Ministry and representatives from Western Union in Bangladesh.

A. Govindarajan, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Tambaram Division, briefed the team.
