Police foil suicide bid

Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD: Fearing that the police may not do justice to his complaint, a 25-year-old man Pamula Ramesh, attempted to immolate himself by dousing petrol in front of the District Police Office, here on Wednesday.

The police on security duty at the DPO foiled his attempt and shifted him to the Government Hospital where his condition was stated to be out of danger. “He suffered 30 per cent burns and he is safe now,” Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar told The Hindu.

Giving details of the incident Mr. Kumar said Ramesh had lodged a complaint with the Makloor police in June stating that four persons from his native village Bonkanpally were harassing his younger sister.

Acting on the complaint the police arrested the four and produced them in a local court here. After hearing both sides, the judge released them after imposing a penalty of Rs. 500 each. However, not satisfied with the punishment given by the court Ramesh once again approached the police.

When the Sub-Inspector summoned Ramesh to the police station stating that the case would be settled in the presence of the village sarpanch and other village elders, Ramesh instead of going to the police station attempted to set himself ablaze, the SP said.
