New era

The UPA’s winning of the trust vote marks the beginning of a new era. The government has heralded a new vision for the future of India. The nuclear deal is the best we can have in the present scenario. It will not only end our nuclear isolation but also solve the energy crisis.

Dr. Singh’s winning of the trust vote and excerpts from his speech have brought back people’s faith in him. The reasons cited by him for supporting the nuclear deal sound good but one cannot help being wary of the U.S. The feeling will persist until the U.S. proves otherwise.

Now that the UPA government has won the trust vote, it can turn to governance. For over two months, it was paralysed by the nuclear deal imbroglio.

The government should act to regain the confidence of the financial markets and set the ball rolling to achieve the projected GDP growth.

The nation has a right to listen to the Prime Minister. It was outrageous of the opposition MPs to prevent him from speaking in the House.

If our MPs are of the opinion that Parliament is a forum that is meant only to score political points, one can only feel sorry. Interruptions may be necessary but a debate should be allowed to go on.

That Dr. Singh was not allowed to reply to the debate on the motion of confidence he himself moved is unfortunate. The BJP, which lost out in the debate, resorted to slogan shouting and disturbing the proceedings.
