CHENNAI: The first stainless steel body wagon was flagged off from the Carriage and Wagon Works, Perambur, on Wednesday. The unit is the first workshop of Indian Railways to upgrade an open wagon into stainless steel body wagon. This will allow each wagon to carry additional freight of 11.6 tonnes. For a 58-wagon rake, it works out to additional freight of 673 tonnes, 16.6 per cent higher than the existing payload of a rake. N.L. Madhusudan, Chief Workshop Engineer, said stainless steel body wagons would improve their reliability and productivity. — Special Correspondent © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
