“Take science to poor children”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Campaigns to popularise science should be taken to the children from the underprivileged families, M. Anandakrishnan, chairman of the executive committee of Science City, said on Wednesday.

Speaking after releasing a souvenir packaging the highlights of the Chennai Science Festival held in February, he pointed out that while the affluent parents by and large took care of the interests of their wards, children of backward families often lacked proper parental guidance.

Many of these underprivileged children were first-generation learners who missed out on opportunities to cultivate an interest in science because of lack of guidance, he added.

The Science City, an autonomous unit under the Department of Higher Education mandated with popularising science, should reach out to this segment, he said.

Prof. Anandakrishnan released the souvenir, handing over the first copy to Shanmukhasundaram, managing director, TICEL.
