As the release date of Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion comes close, the fashion fraternity is anxious to know how the intrepid director has depicted the designers and models. Putting their anxiety to rest, seasoned model and actor Sameer Soni who is playing the role of a gay designer in the film, says it is balanced take on the fashion world. “I accepted the film because it excited me. I found myself trapped in a corporate image and wanted to break it.” Sameer, who made his debut with China Gate and went on to do meaningful films like Dance Like a Man, says people with same sex affliction exist in all the vocations. “Since fashion industry is always under flash bulbs, it is the one which is highlighted the most. I don’t want to make any sweeping remarks but some of the most creative people like Shakespeare and Leonardo Da Vinci are known to have alternative sexual preference.” Having spent so many years in the industry, Sameer says some of his close friends have such preferences, so characterisation was never an issue for him. “Then I am one of those who follows the director’s vision unless asked.”

Sameer was also in news lately for his six-part show on man’s fashion on NDTV Good Times. “Here we moved from the predictable dos and don’ts to specifics with some of the leading editors and designers like Ravi Bajaj and Ashish Soni, who are known for their men’s line.” With disposable incomes on the rise Sameer feels man’s fashion and grooming industry has suddenly become more prominent. “Then Bollywood is a great influence. A few years back not many would have believed that a film is being promoted on the basis of a hero’s six-pack abs. Each actor is working towards a distinct style.”

Conservative choices

Talking of his personal choices, Sameer says he is very conservative. “I am one of those who believes class is never out of fashion. You will mostly find me in denims. I think a hundred times before trying a baby pink shirt with a black blazer, though it is not considered to be outlandish. I am not one of those who will wear yellow just because it is in fashion.” However, when it comes to films and television, he is game to try everything. “Then I have to wear even floral prints. It helps in a way to explore my other sides of personality which otherwise I won’t allow to reflect.”
