THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac has said the Finance Department would go all out against tax evasion during the Onam season. Onam is the time when the markets go hectic in the State. It is when tax evaders hold sway, he said. Talking to presspersons on the sidelines of an official conference here on Friday to plan the drive during the season, Dr. Isaac said the ongoing raids on gold merchants too would continue. He asked the gold merchants who had opted for the compounding system of tax payment to be prompt with their remittances to the government. He said the merchants would get time till September 30 to avail of the benefits of the one-time settlement scheme the government had announced for helping them clear their tax arrears. Those who had gone in appeal against tax assessments placed on them by the department too could use the one-time settlement opportunity. They would get back excess amounts paid if the decisions went in their favour. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
