Title conferred on violinist

TIRUCHI: Speakers at the inaugural of the three-day music festival to mark the birth centenary of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer paid rich tributes to his contribution to the growth and development of Carnatic music.
They underlined the role of this world-renowed vocalist in evolving a unique style with a focus on ensuring continuity in ‘alapana’ and his special efforts in popularising ‘kirtans’ and compositions by eminent composers.
The function, organised by the Nadhadweepam Trust, marked the honouring of renowned violinist T.N. Krishnan with a title ‘Nadhadweepa Kalanidhi’ along with a citation.
Mr. Krishnan went down the memory lane of his association with the late Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. Apart from being an outstanding vocalist, Semmangudi was known for his humanitarian attitude towards his disciples.
Pointing out that the birth centenary was being celebrated all over the world, Mr. Krishnan appreciated the special efforts taken by the Trust to appreciate the late Semmangudi’s works by organising concerts for three days.
The Deputy General Manager of Canara Bank, Tiruchi Circle, S. Nagarajan, conferred the title on Mr. Krishnan and the Director of Dalmia Cements N. Gopalasamy presented him with a gold coin. Flute maestro N. Ramani honoured Mr. Krishnan.
They all highlighted the great service by Semmangudi Srrinivasa Iyer all through his life for promoting Carnatic music all over the world.
The Managing Trustee of the Trust, Tiruchi K. Ramesh said that homage through music at Srirangam would be one of the best tributes to Semmangudi. The celebrations also marked the tenth anniversary of the Trust and its music school.
The Secretary of the Sri Sadguru Sangeetha Sabha S. Thiyagarajan and the noted violinist R. Muralidharan offered felicitations.
