Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, Dr N. Mahalingam and Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee at a function to release Mahatma Gandhi’s Biography in Ten Volumes in New Delhi on Friday. NEW DELHI: Describing Mahatma Gandhi’s statements as timeless, Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Friday said many things that the Father of the Nation said years ago continue to be contemporary and relevant even today. Delivering the presidential address at Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti here after releasing a reprint of Mahatma Gandhi’s biography in English by Pyarelal and Sushila Nayar, Mr. Chidambaram said: “Under the colonial rule, people of this country were being exploited and the colonisers were enriching themselves. On seeing the plight of millions of poor people, Mahatma Gandhi said the earth has enough for everyone’s needs but not enough for everyone’s greed.” Lavishing praise on N. Mahalingam for getting the 10 volumes of Bapu’s biography re-printed, the Finance Minister said the former had enriched Tamil literature. Earlier, Samiti vice-chairperson Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee said: “I take this opportunity to pay homage to Pyarelal and Sushila Behn and especially to their mother, a young and brave widow from Punjab, who allowed her brilliant children to dedicate their lives in the service of Ba (Kasturba) and Bapuji. Homage to Bapuji is homage to Kasturba to ‘mattrashakti’.” Dr. Mahalingam said the moment was historic for him since this was his long-time ambition to publish this monumental work. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
