KOCHI: The picturesque Aeli hills at Keezhmadu near Aluva was bustling with activity for the past two days. Students of Class IX and X from select schools in Aluva and the Emirates National School in Sharjah got under one roof, as part of a student camp organised by the Alwaye English Language Institute. The theme of the camp was ‘building the nation — back to the community’. A.M. Chacko, director of the institute, said the aim was to motivate the boys of adolescent age to have the right ambition in life with moral uprightness and social commitment. Dr. Chacko said the programme was organised to make the younger generation aware of the need to serve the nation and the humanity at large. K.S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, inaugurated the programme on Thursday. Philipose Mar Chrysostom, senior Metropolitan of the Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church, presided over the meeting. K.P. Unnikrishnan, convener of the programme, said that camp programmes included seminars and workshops. Everyday, the camp programme concluded with a variety of cultural programmes presented by professional and amateur artists. On the inaugural day, a jugalbandhi was organised at the venue. A Kathakali demonstration was held on Friday. On Saturday, renowned oncologist V.P. Gangadharan spoke on how to prevent cancer. Noted academician R.V.G. Menon interacted with the students on the role of education in nation building. K.M. Roy, senior journalist, will participate in a media study class on Sunday. Sukumar Azhikode will interact with the camp participants in the evening. Prof. Unnikrishnan said students also participated in debates, quiz competitions, cultural presentations and games during the four-day camp. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
