SAI (Dharwad) posts two wins

BANGALORE: Sports Authority of India (Dharwad) boys registered two convincing victories in the four-team semifinal league of the State Youth (U-16) basketball championship. At the Sree Kanteerava stadium courts here on Monday, the Dharwad boys outwitted VN Sports Club 76-53 in the morning and then returned to humble Beagles 54-34 in the evening session. JSC is the fourth team in the fray.

JSC boys prevailed over Beagles 48-40 in another match in the morning.

In the girls’ section, Jayanagar SC (JSC) scored a thrilling 30-29 come from behind victory in the evening session over Mounts to keep itself in the title hunt after suffering a 36-43 defeat at the hands of Viveks SC in the morning.

Mounts and Viveks SC scored convincing victories over Sports School Chandargi and JSC in the morning session.

The results (Semifinal league): Boys: JSC 48 (Vipul 17, Arjun 12) bt Beagles 40 (Yashas 11); SAI (Dharwad) 76 (Pranav 27, Abhishek 23, Mayur Bhat 15) bt VN Sports Club 53 (Akash Subbaiah 29, Nikilesh 16); SAI (Dharwad) 54 (Mayur Bhat 13) bt Beagles 34 (Yashas 17).

Girls: Mounts Club 35 (Roshini 12) bt Sports School (Chandargi) 28 (Navnitha 14); Viveks SC 43 (Sindhu 21) bt JSC 36; JSC 30 bt Mounts 29.

Easy for St. Joseph’s

St. Joseph’s Pre-University College beat TES College 4-1 in the inter-college hockey tournament conducted by the KSHA here on Monday. Dhananjay (2nd), Naveneeth (16th), Thimanna (36th) and Chengappa (54th) scored for St. Joseph’s while Prabhu (11th) scored for TES.

In another fixture, IIM beat Frank Anthony Public School 3-1. Chandra (29th), Sreejan (38th) and Vinod (50th) scored for IIM and Anand Bura (9th) scored for FAPS.

In the T. Shanmugham memorial tournament for schools, St. Joseph’s Briand Square defeated SSB School 2-0, with Tejas (15th) and Abhishek (23rd) logged the goals for the winner.

In the second match Ramakrishna High School beat Best High School 4-1. Srinivas (7th), Muralidhara (18th), Mahendra (36th) and Vinoba (49th) scored for Ramakrishna HS while Mohammed Usama (15th) scored for Best High School.

Vivus scores win

Vivus Group defeated United Spirits by 50 runs in a Star Kingfisher corporate cricket tournament semifinal match here during the weekend.

HP beat GMR Group by nine-wickets in the other semifinal.

The scores (semifinals): Vivus Group 124 for four in eight overs bt United Spirits 74 for three in eight overs.

GMR Group 74 for five in eight overs lost to HP 75 for one in 6.5 overs.

Arjun downs Balaji

Balaji Reddy met more than his match in A.R. Arjun, while Ajay Bhushan cruised along in the qualifying rounds of the senior State-ranking billiards championship at the KSBA hall here.

Arjun downed Balaji 150-111, 150-77, while Ajay proved far too good for L.N. Nagraj winning 150-47, 151-109.

ICL camp concludes

The Indian Cricket League camp commenced at the Jain International Residential School campus here on Monday.

According to an ICL press release, the league’s high performance director Jock Campbell will be in charge of the two-week camp and the emphasis will be on fitness and on anti-doping measures. The ICL has also inducted a support staff of sprint coach Zane Allan Campbell and throwing coach Mathew James Buckley. Coach Steve Rixon meanwhile will supervise the cricketing skills aspect of the camp.

Kiran More, ICL’s executive board member, said: “Maintaining the spirit and integrity of the game is of paramount importance to the ICL. This is the main objective of organising the pre-season camp which will cover all areas.” And Jock Campbell added: “Fitness should be achieved through ethical means and we will educate all the ICL players on the international doping policy.”

Tanveer excels

Tanveer from Mysore excelled in the two-wheeler category of the Boch dirt track event held here. Tanveer won three titles including Expert Class, Indian Open and the Four Stroke events.

In the four wheeler section, Akash Ithal won the Indian Open title. Tanveer was declared the ‘best rider’ and Samarth was adjudged the ‘fastest driver.’

Thimmappiah remembered

The Karnataka State Cricket Association condoled the death of its former president, Dr. K. Thimmappiah, here on Sunday.

In a press release issued on Monday, the KSCA president Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, on behalf of the association, expressed regret and also extended moral support to the bereaved family.

Inter-school volleyball

The Spikers Youth Sports Club will be conducting its 24th State-level inter-school volleyball tournament for under-14 and under-17 categories at the Corporation grounds, Jayanagar from August 1 to 3.
