SRINAGAR: In the first major breach of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan since 2003, a group of Pakistani soldiers sneaked into the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) on Monday and fired on Indian positions, killing one jawan. The attack was repulsed and the exchange of fire was continuing when reports last came in.

A Defence spokesman said over a dozen Pakistani soldiers sneaked into this side of the LoC at Nowgam in Handwara sector and fired heavily at the army personnel on guard. The fire was returned by the Indian troops, triggering a fierce gunfight.

“A soldier identified as Sepoy Mahesh was killed,” said the Defence spokesman, adding, "Gunfight is going on."

Unconfirmed reports said two Pakistani soldiers were killed in the retaliatory fire, but this was not confirmed by Army sources.

Because of darkness, it could not be ascertained what was the fate of the Pakistani soldiers.

Inspector-General of Police (North Kashmir) B. Srinivas said the Pakistani troops made an attempt to breach the LoC at Eagle 5 Post in Nowgam, Handwara. They were challenged, and in the gunfight that followed the Indian jawan was killed. “Heavy casualties were also inflicted on the Pakistani side,” he added.
