Fine spell by Sai Aravind

Chennai: K. Sai Aravind’s four wickets for 21 runs helped St. Bede’s AIHSS ‘A’ defeat Govt. HSS ‘A’ by eight wickets, in the TNCA-Boost City schools under-16 cricket tournament for the C. Ramaswamy Trophy.

The scores: Govt. HSS ‘A’ 88 for seven in 25 overs (K. Sai Aravind four for 12) lost to St. Bede’s AIHSS ‘A’ 89 for two in 20.3 overs (Leonard Bruno 39 n.o.); Santhome HSS ‘B’ 90 in 24 overs lost to John’s ES & JC 91 for nine in 23.3 overs (S.R. Vibhu 28, Sai Rupesh three for eight, R. Sabarish Kumar three for 20).

Narrow win for Bharath Group

Bharath Group beat Reliance Communication by nine runs in a rain-curtailed match in the 12th SSI-YSCA Trophy on Sunday. In another match, rain forced a draw between United India Insurance and Southern Auto Centre. Both teams got two points each.

The scores: Bharath Group 121 for four in 20 overs (K. Ramesh 45, Jeyaskandan 41) bt Reliance Communication 112 for nine in 20 overs (Chandran 52); UI 170 for eight in 30 overs (N. Kalayanaraman 52, K. Viswanathan 45) drew with Southern Auto Centre 21 for three in 7.4 overs.

The scores: Under-14: Little Hearts CA 135 for five in 30 overs (U. Vishal 72 n.o.) bt JS Rao CA 110 in 27 overs (Rathesh 30, Krishna 27, Kaushik U. Ram three for 21, Nagaraj three for 13). U-12: Adhi Chetty CA 145 for eight in 30 overs (Sri Ram 41, Karthik Prabhu 31, Rohith three for 22) vs. Little Hearts CA 46 for one in 12.1 overs (R. Karthik 26 n.o.), Match abandoned due to rain.

Malarselvam is president

S. Malarselvam was elected president of the Chennai District Baseball Association in its general body meeting held here recently.

The St. Joseph’s College of Engineering will hold a South Zone inter-collegiate athletics meet at its premises on August 25 and 26.

There will be prize money for the top three places in individual events and enhanced money for the relays.

A separate award will be given for men and women for outstanding performances.

The last date for entries will be August 20.

D.G. Vaishnav College wins table tennis title

D.G. Vaishnav College (Arumbakkam) emerged champion in table tennis in the University of Madras ‘B’ zone men’s tournaments held here on Monday.

Jaya College of Arts and Science finished runner-up.

In chess, R.K.M. Vivekananda College came up trumps, while Apollo College took the runner-up spot.

Qualifiers spotted

Venkatesh Prasad Anala, Aman Agarwal, C. Ravishanker, Bhupal Raju, K. Sai Sandeep, S. Gokul, Aswin Srivatsav and Manoj Parthiban made it to under-16 the main draw of the Lanson Toyota UC MAS-Singaram Pillai tennis tournament, here.

In the under-14 category, Akil Kanagaraj, Venkatesha Prasad, Aman Agarwal, Nipun Bajaj, T. Vignesh, Rahul Manoah, Eliya Devan and Vasudav Viyayaram qualified.

Women’s meet

Srimathi Devkunvar Nanalal Bhatt Vaishnav College will conduct the Bhatt Memorial tournament for women from July 30 to August 1 at the college premises.

The inter-collegiate event will consist of football, hockey, kho-kho, handball, badminton and kabaddi.

Meanwhile, the inter-school tournament will comprise volleyball and kho-kho.
