Group-I reservation issue in Supreme Court

HYDERABAD: The controversy over the implementation of reservation in the preliminary of the Group-I services has landed in the Supreme Court but interestingly the BC candidates are already above the 1:50 ratio as being sought by several organisations. In the open category for 69 vacancies 3,173 have been called for Mains with the ratio being 1:46 while the ratio in BC (A) category is 1:89 with 799 qualified candidates for the 9 posts reserved for them. In the BC (B) category the ratio is 1:148 with 1,772 candidates qualifying as against 12 posts reserved for them. In the BC (D) category the ratio is 1:158 with 1,579 candidates qualifying for 10 posts.

In the seats reserved for women, qualified candidates from these groups is less than 1:50 ratio. Similar is the case with SC and ST categories and the open category women candidates. Officials say if reservations were to be implemented several candidates in BC (B) and BC (D) categories would fail to qualify for Mains. APPSC Chairman, Y. Venkatrami Reddy said the idea of approaching the Supreme Court was of the Commission and not the Chairman. “Since three different judgements are given on the same issue by the High Court, we thought of getting a clear judgement from the Supreme Court once for all,” he said.
