‘A need to expand the restriction on age for admissions’

‘More corporate leadership in education required’


COIMBATORE: Bharathiar University will join hands with the newly formed JSS University, Mysore, for offering joint courses in hospital and medical management for enabling para-medical staff, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University G. Thiruvasagam, said here on Friday.

Felicitation

Speaking at a function got up to felicitate B. Suresh, the first Vice-Chancellor of JSS University, Mr. Thiruvasagam said that with the spurt in hospitals and increase in modern facilities, there was a dire need for well-trained staff.

“These management courses will give us a lot of qualified people,” he said.

Courses

At present Bharathiar University was offering 24 such management courses – certificate, diploma and degree – in collaboration with the city hospitals.

But, the new courses that would be much more in number would have joint affiliation of both the universities.

MoU

A memorandum of understanding to this effect would soon be signed, according to Mr. Thiruvasagam.

“This is the first time that an arts and science university is entering into an MoU with a medical university,” he said.

Dr. Suresh in his acceptance speech said that there was a need to further elevate the pharmacy profession in society.

Expand restrictions

“There is a great need to expand the base and restriction on age for admissions by educational institutions,"he said.

"Universities should be a position to impart education throughout an individual’s life. Every institution has to develop its core competencies.”

“ More corporate leadership in education is also needed,”he added.

R. Venkatesalu, Managing Trustee, SNR Sons Charitable Trust, G. Bakthavathsalam, Chairman, KG Hospital, C. R. Swaminathan, Chief Executive of PSG Institutions, and W. Selvamurthy, Chief Controller (LS &HR), Defence Research and Development Organisation, besides others, felicitated Dr. Suresh as the first Vice-Chancellor of the newly formed university.
