Two Head Post Offices to work till 10 p.m.

CHENNAI: Beginning Monday, two postmen attached to the Mylapore and T.Nagar Head Post Offices will deliver postal articles up to 9 pm, said Chennai City Region Postmaster General M.S. Ramanujam on Sunday.

Talking to mediapersons, Mr. Ramanujam said that the late evening delivery (1 pm to 9 pm) was being done on a trial basis to ensure 100 per cent delivery of postal articles. Later, it would be extended to other post offices. Commercial-cum-residential areas have been identified for this purpose.

After launching ‘Logistics Post’ and ‘Pack Post’ services, Mr. Ramanujam said the Mylapore Head Post Office would function till 10 pm from Monday to Saturday, while on Sundays and holidays it would provide counter services from 10 am to 4 pm. Similar timings would be introduced in the Triplicane Post Office soon.

“Following demands from people, we have decided to keep the counter services open on Sundays and holidays. It will also benefit office-goers, students and other private sector employees. On Sundays and holidays, you can get most of the postal services, except savings bank operations,” he said.

Chennai City Central Division Senior Superintendent of Post Offices R. Venkataraman said Logistics Post centre would be opened at Madras University Post Office soon. For consignment weighing up to 50 kg, the minimum charge would be Rs. 50 along with a docket charge of Rs. 100. Consignments up to Madurai would be delivered the next day, while it might take one more day for destinations beyond Madurai.

As for the Pack Post, he said customers could bring their items and have them packed by postal officials for a nominal charge. The packaging material would be provided by the department. Two officials had been exclusively trained in packaging, he added.
