Lack basic amenities: Life is miserable for residents of Kathayammal Nagar at Maniyanur in Salem. —

Salem: Residents of nearly 200 families in Kathayammal Nagar at Maniyanur in the city are living without any basic amenities for a decade.

There are about 200 families, all belonging to middle and low income groups, have been living in this residential locality for more than 10 years.

Neglected

The residents charge that the locality falling under the Kondalampatti division of the Salem Corporation is being neglected for long.

The drainage overflows on the streets since the Corporation has not built any drainage channel.

Basic amenities

“Mosquitoes and rats play havoc with our lives and belongings,” said a woman who is living in the colony since its formation.

The people have submitted scores of petitions seeking the civic body to provide basic amenities for their locality.

“They all have fallen on deaf ears,” she further added.

No roads

The residential locality also lacks pucca roads.

“We ourselves formed roads and streets so that we and our children can access to our houses without much hurdles.

Rain

But during rain, the life here is becoming miserable,” said another resident, who has two school going children.

They all complain that neither the ward councillor nor any official has come to their rescue so far.

“While the Corporation never fails to collect the taxes, our genuine demands for basic facilities remain unattended,” they pointed out.
