Residents protest against Metrowater pipeline work

Police protection sought for laying pipeline

CHENNAI: Tension prevailed on Katpada Main Road, Old Washermenpet, for sometime on Wednesday after the residents staged a protest against a pipeline work of the Chennai Metrowater in their locality.

Following the interruption, the Metrowater sought police protection to go ahead with the laying of an additional pipeline that would supply water to Katpada Third Street. According to its officials, the work was being implemented to ensure adequate supply to the tail-end area.

The residents of Katpada Main Road objected to the work as they apprehended that water supply to their street would be reduced.

Police said that their personnel were deployed on the main road as it was the route to a crematorium nearby. They added that the residents also objected to the project as the digging work for the pipeline would pose hindrance to the local population.

The improvement works are being taken up in the area under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission to provide water to those streets in the tail-end pockets and also the streets being served by mobile tankers.

A group of residents, who gathered when the work began, dispersed hours later following an assurance from the police and the Metrowater officials.
