All 240 seats filled in new colleges

TIRUCHI: All the 240 seats in each of the four new constituent colleges of Anna University–Tiruchi have been filled in the counselling for engineering admissions.

Classes will commence on September 1 for Civil, Mechanical, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering in these colleges functioning at Ariyalur, Tirukuvalai in Nagapattinam district, Panrutti in Cuddalore , and Ramanathapuram district from temporary locations. Common syllabus will be followed for the first two years of these programmes, Vice-Chancellor V. Ramachandran told journalists on Thursday. Sites have been identified for establishing permanent campuses. At Kavanur in Ariyalur district, permanent buildings will come up on a 20-acre site donated by the Union Minister for Communication and IT A. Raja and an adjoining site of three acres.

The university will register in its name a private site measuring 25.5 acres, at Tirukkuvalai next week. At Panrutti, the university has set in motion the process of obtaining a 25-acre plot belonging to Chennai Metrowater Board, and in Ramanathapuram district too, alienation process is on for a 26-acre site that includes 17 acres of poromboke, he said.

Prof. Ramachandran hoped to shift the colleges from the start of the next academic year. Buildings for all the four colleges will be constructed with the same plan at an estimated expenditure of Rs. 17.6 crore each, he said.
