Free cycles for 140 students

TIRUVARUR: Minister for Dairy Development U. Mathivanan distributed free cycles to 140 students of Plus Two at Government Higher Secondary School at Thiruneipur in Tiruvarur taluk on Thursday.

The minister said that it had been planned to distribute free cycles to 11,656 students in Tiruvarur district at a cost of Rs. 2.82 crore. This was Rs. 52 lakh more than last year. Free cycles were given to students belonging to Adi Dravida, backward and most backward communities.

The Minister said that the State Government had done a lot for Tiruvarur district in the field of education. A medical college and a Central University were coming up, he said.

Later, the Minister inaugurated a library at Dr.U.Ve.Swaminatha Iyer Memorial building at Uthamadhanapuram village in Valangaiman taluk.

The building, where Iyer was born, was made a memorial by the Government at a cost of Rs. 23 lakh and it was declared open on April 27. Now a library has been added for the villagers.

The Minister also distributed Rs. 400 each to three aged spinsters at Thiruneipur.

Collector M. Chandrasekaran spoke at the functions.
