Ponnamaravathy and Karambakudi to be carved out of Tirumayam and Alankudi taluks Official sources say that this move will take administrative machinery closer to the people PUDUKOTTAI: The State Government has decided to bifurcate the Tirumayam and Alankudi taluks in the district to take the administrative machinery closer to the people. Ponnamaravathy and Karambakudi will be the headquarters of the new taluks to be carved out of Tirumayam and Alankudi taluks respectively. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced the bifurcation during the course of the Budget proposals and the district administration had drafted plans, demarcating the revenue villages and firkas under the jurisdiction of the new taluks. The district administration had sent the draft copy to the State Government through the Commissioner for Revenue Administration for approval. Official sources said that, with this, the efficiency of administrative machinery would improve. The draft had been prepared ensuring consistency with the boundary of the Assembly constituencies, sources said. The size of Tirumayam and Alankudi taluks are quite large, forcing villagers to travel a long distance to reach the taluk office. The bifurcation would facilitate such villagers to get necessary assistance at Ponnamaravathy. Tirumayam taluk secretary of Communist Party of India A. L. Raj said that the bifurcation would bring with it other facilities, particularly health care. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
