Hoteliers seek withdrawal of VAT

Kozhikode: Hoteliers have demanded withdrawal of value added tax (VAT) and other cess on cooked food and beverages served in hotels.

“Imposing VAT on hotel food is grossly unfair since cooked food and beverages are highly perishable commodities and the less easily perishable vegetables, fish and meat do not attract tax,” N.B. Krishna Kurup, president of the Hotel and Restaurant Association, said after a meeting of the State committee of the association on Saturday.
